We speak to Juliana Gutierrez, group bookings officer at Jodrell Bank in Cheshire, about what to expect from a group trip and the best times to visit.

Jodrell Bank is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the UK’s largest radio telescope.

What is one thing that all guests should look out for on a visit?

Everyone says the Whispering Dishes are so much fun, but I think the ‘telescope talks’ are an absolute must. These are included in admission and take place in the shadow of the Lovell Telescope.

They’re led by our team of knowledgeable explainers, who are extremely passionate about what they do and love to pass on sparks of inspiration about the universe.

What’s the best fact about the Lovell Telescope that you love telling people?

There are so many, but the fact that it has a rich history in espionage and was used by GCHQ until as recently as the 90s is fascinating. We have a new permanent exhibition called The Story of Jodrell Bank which reveals many of the Lovell’s secrets; from Sputnik to spies, and it’s incredible to know this was happening so close to home.

For anyone that’s never been before, what would you say to tempt them into a visit?

You don’t need to have any prior knowledge of space - it’s a place to be in awe of the universe, gaze upon the sheer size of the Lovell and to enjoy an inspiring day out with friends and family.

When is the best time of year and time of day for groups to visit?

We’re open all year round, but for me, it’s springtime. We have cherry blossom in bloom and the rural location means the lambs in the nearby fields, and there’s a real buzz about the place.

The site features lovely walks and an arboretum, as well as lots of picnic spots and cafes to sit and take it all in.

Is there anything coming up next year that you’re excited about?

New for 2025 is the launch of our Heritage Talks for Groups. For the first time, due to many requests we now offer a choice of ‘The Space Race and the Cold War’ and ‘Jodrell Bank and Radio Astronomy’.

Groups can select which one they’d like, and we arrange the rest. We’ve also redesigned our Afternoon Tea menu which is very popular.
