A round-up of great accommodation options for large groups in the picturesque county of Somerset.
Home to top attractions such as the Roman Baths, Cheddar Gorge and Wookey Hole Caves, Somerset has plenty on offer for visitors. Group Leisure has pulled together some ideas to ensure a great overnight stay for groups, including manor houses and a turreted castle.
Walton Castle, Clevedon
Groups that are tempted by the idea of staying in a castle need look no further. Walton Castle sleeps up to 20 in 8 bedrooms and boasts eight turrets, an indoor swimming pool, four acres of grounds, open fires, a games room, entertainment suites, and two function rooms.
The main part of the accommodation is housed on four floors in an octagon keep, while additional suites are located in the outlying turrets.
Bristol, Bath Spa and Glastonbury are all within a half hour drive away, and the location is popular for golfing holidays as the castle is based within the 400 acre Clevedon Golf Course.
Stonnwall Manor Estate, Frome
This Grade 1 listed Elizabethan Manor is 400 years old and located in its own private landscaped gardens.
Up to 28 can sleep in its 13 bedrooms and the manor boasts many original characteristics such as stone gabled roofs, leaded light windows, historic fireplaces and oak stripped floors.
Groups can enjoy cream tea in the elevated gazebo, or explore the estate where they will find formal gardens, rockeries, a pond, croquet lawn and an underground bomb shelter which is decorated like a 1940s living room.
Sparkford Hall
Sparkford Hall, Bruton
For groups that like a touch of luxury Sparkford Hall, set in 23 acres of parkland, might prove an option worth considering.
The Georgian self-catering country house sleeps up to 28 among its 11 individually designed bedrooms. The house also boasts nine bathrooms and a large dining room that seats 28, as well as a games room and sitting room. Although it is self-catering, caterers can be arranged to come in.
For larger groups, there’s also the option of bell tents, tepees, yurts and caravans in the grounds.
Cannington Grange, Cannington
Up to 44 can sleep at Cannington Grange which is situated within 3.5 acres of private landscaped gardens. The estate is made up of eight properties, ranging from a farthing cottage that sleeps four, to the biggest, Ruscombe Hall that sleeps ten. All can be booked for large groups staying together. Facilities include an indoor heated pool and sauna, a games room with pool, table tennis and pub football, a gym, a tennis court and a large fishing pond.
YHA Bath Somerset
Larger groups can stay at modern hostel YHA Bath, which is sleeps up to 121 in 27 bedrooms. The hostel offers a range of catering options, including breakfast and evening meals with the option of packed lunches if groups fancy eating on the go.
The sleeping options vary from private, family and dormitory style rooms, some of which have en-suite facilities. On site, there’s also a small self-catering kitchen, a dining and restaurant area, a bar and lounge. The location is just a short walk from the centre of the historic city of Bath.
