We gave our readers the chance to see Hadestown at the Lyric Theatre in London’s West End. Here is what they thought of the performance.

The overall feedback from our free reader theatre night was that the brilliant music in Hadestown was matched by fantastic performers.

Group Leisure & Travel readers were able to experience the record-breaking sensation by singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell and director Rachel Chavkin on 22nd January after Hadestown arranged a free ticket offer.

The show has won eight Tony Awards including Best Musical and the Grammy Award for Best Musical Theatre Album, and it’s clear to see why according to the lucky GTOs who were given tickets.

Donna Gale of Donna’s Day Trips, said: “I would recommend groups go and see this show because it was refreshingly different to other musicals, and I loved every single original song. The acting was slick, the choreography excellent and the set imaginative.

“The whole show was brilliant from the word go, and seeing the cast, along with the musicians on stage, was really innovative.”

“It really is a fabulous show with a wonderful cast and Patrick Page is outstanding as Hades.”

Julie Goddard, GTO for Crofton Cultural and Social Club.

John Smith, who organises trips for Love Life – Love Travel, agreed. He told us: “This show is so unusual but extremely enjoyable with dancing, singing and choreography being of the highest order.

“The second half of the show was by far the most exciting and momentous, with tensions growing as the story line came to a dramatic end. Groups would welcome such a show to their schedule because they will want to talk about it with all their fellow travellers.”

The show tells the tale of two mythic love stories, that of young dreamers Orpheus and Eurydice, and that of King Hades and his wife Persephone.

Lesley Winterflood of Theatre Trips Essex added: “We had fantastic seats in the stalls for this beautiful retelling of the story of Orpheus and Eurydice.

“The staging is amazing, with a live band on stage. The cast are incredibly talented and tell the story in such a beautiful and emotional way. I thoroughly enjoyed it and would 100% watch again and recommend people to see this show.”

Gina Savill-Turner, Upminster & Cranham Residents Association, said: “I enjoyed the mix of music and the performers are extremely talented, I also liked the way Hermes guided the audience through the story. My favourite part of the show was definitely the mix of blues and folk music.”

Melanie La Barrie and the company in Hadestown

Melanie La Barrie stars as Hermes in Hadestown.

It’s clear that it wasn’t just the music and staging that was a hit. The characters and the people behind them also struck a chord.

Julie Goddard, GTO for Crofton Cultural and Social Club, said: “It really is a fabulous show with a wonderful cast and Patrick Page is outstanding as Hades.”

Kelly Lywood of NK Travels, added: “I really enjoyed the way Persephone would arrive on the train and bring summer, Hermes was also great.”

It is always good to see something before you take a group, so a big thank you to Hadestown for enabling GLT readers to watch the show for free. It’s certainly different but the majority of feedback we received was resoundingly positive.

Seen by three million people, streamed by over 350 million and adored by fans around the world, Hadestown is booking until 28th September 2025 with discounted tickets available at selected performances for ten or more people.
