Jackie Ring, organiser for Guildford U3A, reports back from a branch meeting and fam day exploring Windsor and Eton.
AGTO Southern Branch held a very interesting and informative branch meeting and Fam day at Windsor and Eton Brewery. Many thanks to Julia White, visitor manager for Windsor and Eton for arranging the day and to Bob Morrison for hosting us.
Some of the highlights (after the meeting)?
We enjoyed a short, guided walk along the river into Eton, then some went on a Thames river cruise with French Brothers while others visited Windsor Theatre for a performance of A Thousand Clowns starring Will Young.
We discovered there’s a wide variety of things to do with our groups in Windsor and Eton, and Julia is now on-hand to help us plan itineraries to suit whatever our members like to do.
A guide from Eton Walking Tours, just across the river, will take your group around the town and college buildings and playing fields, including some galleries depending on the day of your visit, or the College Tours involve going into the buildings and chapel as well.
Since the meeting, I’ve booked to take my group to Windsor Castle in September for the Platinum Jubilee: The Queen’s Coronation where we’re also having a talk on the 1992 fire and restoration which is only available to groups.
Guide for groups
Visit Windsor has a new Travel Trade Guide which includes details of activities and experiences in the area. It features hidden gems such as the Maidenhead Heritage Centre, where you can fly a Spitire Simulator, and the Spencer Gallery where exhibitions of 20th century British artist’s work change every six months.
There’s also themed itineraries to help inspire your next trip as well as essential information such as coach parking and details on where to stay.
