Dusty, a new musical charting the life of Dusty Springfield, will tour four cities including Newcastle and Sheffield in June and July next year.
The musical will have its world premiere at Theatre Royal Bath on 23rd June, before heading to The Lyceum in Sheffield, Newcastle Theatre Royal, and The Lowry in Salford.
With what’s described as a ‘fiercely funny and emotionally charged script’ from BAFTA and Olivier nominated writer Jonathan Harvey (Beautiful Thing, Coronation Street), Dusty will be directed by Olivier Award-winner Maria Friedman (Merrily We Roll Along, Stepping Out).
In the title role will be Katherine Kingsley, whose theatre credits include playing Marlene Dietrich in Piaf and Christine Colgate in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. Her on-screen credits include the film Genius as well as appearances on The Bill, Casualty and Bad Education.
Further casting will be announced in due course.
Dusty: Synopsis
Featuring many of Dusty Springfield’s soulful pop hits, including I Only Want to Be with You, Son of a Preacher Man and You Don't Have to Say You Love Me, Dusty is a celebration of Springfield’s career in music.
Audiences will discover how the London born musician’s career started in the late 1950s, and learn of the journey that saw her become known across the world for her soulful voice and iconic look, with hits spanning four decades.
The musical has originated from the notes and memoirs of the late singer’s friend and manager Vicki Wickham, as well as conversations with her personal assistant Pat Rhodes, and friend and record company executive Tris Penna.
