Group rail holiday provider Great Rail Journeys has revealed three 2020 itineraries that will take passengers to celebrate The Oberammergau Passion Play in the Bavarian Alps.
The Oberammergau Passion Play takes place only once every ten years and tells the story of the life and death of Jesus Christ.
Passion Play rail holidays
The three new Oberammergau itineraries explore either Lake Garda, the Austrian Alps or the Castles, mountains and Lakes of Bavaria, and the highlight of each tour is the Oberammergau Passion Play.
More than 2,000 locals are involved in the play as actors, musicians and technical crew, while the event attracts crowds from all over the world.
Performances take place from May to September in the specially constructed 4,700-seat outside auditorium.
The play’s tradition dates back to 1634 and is thought to be a piece of living history, as the inhabitants of Oberammergau made a vow back then to perform it every ten years, if God would spare them from the bubonic plague.
The tail goes that after the vow was made, not a single inhabitant is said to have died from the plague and those that were already suffering from it reportedly recovered.
