The world premiere of new musical Groundhog Day will open at the Old Vic Theatre this July, having been adapted from the original 1993 film of the same name.
The musical will run from 11th July until 17th September. Priority tickets are available now, while general sale begins on 12th April.
Synopsis
Groundhog Day follows the story of Phil Connors, a cynical Pittsburgh TV weatherman who is sent to cover the annual Groundhog Day event in the isolated small town of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania.
Phil finds himself caught in a time loop, forced to repeat the same day again and again. As each day plays out exactly the same as before Phil becomes increasingly despondent – but Phil, and watching audiences, will realise that there's a lesson to be learnt through his experiences.
Casting
The character of Phil Connors will be played by Andy Karl. Karl’s Broadway credits include Rocky, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, Jersey Boys, Wicked, Legally Blonde, The Wedding Singer and Saturday Night Fever.
Further casting is to be announced in the near future.
Creatives
Groundhog Day is directed by Matthew Warchus, with music by composer and lyricist Tim Minchin. Choreographer Peter Darling and designer Rob Howell are also part of the creative team.
All four individuals, who were some of the creators of Matilda The Musical, have joined forces with writer Danny Rubin to collaborate on this new musical based on Rubin’s original Groundhog Day film.
