The Cumbria-based railway offers visitors the chance to enjoy panoramic views of the coast and mountain scenery between the Lake District national park’s only coastal village in Ravenglass and Dalegarth in the Eskdale Valley.

Ravenglass & Eskdale steam railway is the UK’s longest narrow gauge railway.

Ravenglass & Eskdale steam railway turns 150 years old in 2025, and is marking the occasion with the launch of a variety of itineraries tailored for groups, including cream teas and additional tours.

2025 group itineraries

  • Premium Carriage Hire: Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway has three VIP carriages, seating from 8-18 people on some scheduled services. Private charter train options are also available on request.
  • Steam to the Hills: A return steam departure from Ravenglass station on the coast to Dalegarth. There is an option of either an immediate return journey from Dalegarth for Boot station, or take time to alight and explore the dramatic landscape.
  • Cream Tea for Groups: Choose from pre-order cream tea picnic boxes to enjoy on the train journey up the valley, or indulge in a full cream tea experience on the upper floor of the Turntable Cafe at Ravenglass station. Bookings are for a minimum of ten people.
  • Railway and Muncaster Castle: A return steam journey from Ravenglass, including a visit to Muncaster Castle and Gardens. This combined tour also features a bird of prey display.
  • Railway & Ullswater Cruise: Make the most of your time spent in the Lake District with a sailing on one of the area’s finest heritage attractions, Ullswater Steamers.

The railway offers festive bookings, including a mince pie on ‘Mince Pie’ trains.

Christmas tours and itineraries have also been launched for 2025 and a Christmas timetable will operate from Boxing Day 2025 to 1st January 2026. Pre-booked festive lunches can be enjoyed at the Ratty Arms pub, or enjoy a mince pie on the train. 

During limited dates in December 2025, groups of ten or more can pre-book traditional Christmas lunch at The Ratty Arms.

Groups visiting Ravenglass & Eskdale steam railway can also enter the Ravenglass Railway Museum free of charge. 

Organised tour groups of ten or more people qualify for group fares for advanced bookings. Tour guides and essential companions travel free, with free parking available for coaches at Ravenglass station.
