Groups will be able to tour Hiroshige: artist of the open road and Ancient India: living traditions at the British Museum, with discounted group booking rates available.
Located on Great Russell Street, London the museum was the world’s first national public museum and holds more than eight million items and artefacts from across the world.
Groups visiting in the spring and summer of 2025 will be able to book to see two new temporary exhibitions in the Joseph Hotung Great Court Gallery (Room 35) and the Sainsbury Exhibitions Gallery (Room 30).
From 1st May to 7th September, Hiroshige: artist of the open road will feature the work of Utagawa Hiroshige (1797–1858) in the Joseph Hotung Great Court Gallery. Visitors can join Hiroshige, one of Japan’s most talented, prolific and popular artists, to discover Edo Japan, exploring the natural beauty of landscapes and the bustle of urban life, also considering the artist’s influence on modern and contemporary work.
The exhibition, which is the first of Hiroshige to be held at the British Museum and the first focused on the artist in London for more than a quarter of a century, will explore Hiroshige’s art and legacy through prints, drawings, illustrated books and paintings from the British Museum collection, along with gifted and loaned prints from a major US collector.
The Sainsbury Exhibitions Gallery will host Ancient India: living traditions from 22nd May until 12th October 2025. The exhibition will explore the origins of the sacred art of three of the world’s major religions, Hinduis, Budhism and Jainism, looking at depictions of deitys such as Ganesha.
This will be one of the first major exhibitions in the world to look at the early sacred art of India from a multi-faith, contemporary and global perspective and will showcase more than 180 objects – including sculptures, paintings, drawings and manuscripts – to explore how these indigenous religions transformed India’s sacred landscape and shaped works of art.
More information on the exhibitions, alongside tickets sale dates will be announced in early 2025.
The British Museum welcomes groups of any size for pre-booked visits. Special rates for groups of ten or more are available for weekday visits to exhibitions. Non-museum guided tours and tour groups, regardless of size, will not be permitted entry to exhibitions.
