Lumley Castle Hotel in County Durham has teamed up with Escape Rooms Durham to create a new escape room challenge within the castle.
Believed to be the first escape room in the UK to be situated within an historic site, the escape room is being created in the castle’s former beer cellar.
The new visitor attraction is scheduled to launch on 14th February 2019, with tickets available to book now.
Lumley Castle’s escape room
The new game, titled ‘Lily of Lumley’, is based on the story of the Lady Lily of Lumley. Legend states that she was cast down a well by Catholic priests in the 14th century for renouncing her faith. Claims of seeing her ghost have since been made frequently by visitors to the castle.
The aim is for visitors to solve the mystery and free Lily of her curse in order to complete the game.
The escape room experience will be open to residents and non-residents of the hotel, with the option to add an overnight stay, afternoon tea package, or dinner in the hotel’s Black Knight restaurant.
Lauren Colledge, Lumley Castle’s sales manager, said: “Lumley Castle’s charm is that its history – from its Medieval construction to some of the finest Georgian plasterwork in existence – is evident at every turn.
“The ancient cellars are the perfect setting for a game which sets visitors the task of unlocking the secret of a tragic heroine and we are confident the new escape room will be an asset to the hotel and to the wider region.”
Although the experience is based on the legend of Lily of Lumley, the experience is said to be family friendly and suitable for anyone over the age of ten.
