Nativity! The Musical

The world premiere of Nativity! The Musical will be staged at Birmingham’s Repertory Theatre and will be followed by a short UK tour and a season in London, next year.

The popular Christmas film, Nativity!, which starred Martin Freeman, has been adapted into a stage musical and will debut on 20th October 2017, in Birmingham.

The premiere will take place prior to a short UK tour that will visit Southend Cliffs Pavilion, Sheffield Lyceum, Manchester Palace and Plymouth Theatre Royal.

The new musical will also play for a season at London’s Hammersmith Eventim Apollo, before a Christmas season at Leeds Grand Theatre.

The musical will be written and directed by the creator of the films, Debbie Isitt. 

The catchy sing-along songs from the films, such as Sparkle and Shine and One Night One Moment will be featured in the musical, written and composed by Nicky Ager and Debbie Isitt. The production will also include some brand new festive tunes.

Further details, including casting, are still to be announced.

Plot summary

The story follows Mr Maddens, an underachieving actor who ends up becoming a primary school teacher. 

One Christmas he is reluctantly put in charge of the school’s nativity play. With the help of his bizarre teaching assistant, Mr Poppy, Mr Maddens creates a Christmas musical for his class. 

Trouble then occurs when he tells his class that Hollywood will be coming to film their performance, a lie which ends up getting out of hand.

The Nativity! film franchise began in 2009 with its first film, which starred Martin Freeman, Pam Ferris and Ashley Jensen.  

The musical will primarily be based on the first film. 

The sequels went on to star David Tennant, Joanna Page, Martin Clunes and Catherine Tate.
