The National Wallace Monument in Scotland is gearing up for a bumper year of events to celebrate its 150th anniversary.

In total there will be 150 days of special events in 2019, to commemorate 150 years since the monument first opened to the public.

A majority of the events are due to be free to attend.

The events will be hugely varied and will include everything from a spring and autumn lecture programme with guest speakers, to family friendly activities every day in July and August.

These events will take place in addition to the already existing performances that take place from costumed actors at the attraction.

One of the highlights of the calendar is expected to be the evening spectacle ‘Wallace 150’, which will take place on 11th September – the anniversary date.
Speaking of the 150th anniversary events, Les Perez, general manager of Stirling District Tourism, said: “There is a lot to look forward to in the coming year.

The monument started telling the story of William Wallace 150 years ago, and now it’s time to tell this story to a different generation.

“Through these series of special events and activities, hosted year-round at the Monument, we hope to see more visitors of all ages coming to learn about Scotland’s history, and the legacy that William Wallace has left.”

The refurbishment of the National Wallace Monument

As part of the 2019 programme, Stirling District Tourism, the charity responsible for running the monument, has announced that it will be investing £500,000 into the refurbishment of the exhibition galleries.

An additional £100,000 is being spent on the enhanced programme of events. This is in addition to the ongoing £500,000 investment in the conservation of the building, which is managed by Stirling Council.

To allow for the refurbishment of the interior galleries to take place, the National Wallace Monument will close temporarily from 18th February 2019 and will reopen to the public again in April.
