SS Shieldhall is taking part in a joint sailing from Southampton Docks in tandem with PS Waverly in September to celebrate 70 years on the water, and groups can book with discounts available.

Steamship Shieldhall and PS Waverley will sail together along the south coast.

Southampton’s heritage steamship, SS Shieldhall is celebrating 70 years on the water with a schedule of voyages culminating with a joint sailing in tandem with PS Waverly in September.

On Saturday 13th September, ‘Steam Together’ will see the vessel steam down Southampton Water and head out to the Solent Forts, before meeting with Waverley and heading west in tandem towards Cowes.

Groups can take advantage of discounted tickets for the voyage which is set to depart Southampton’s Western Docks at 1pm on Saturday 13th September and return at 7pm. Refreshments will be available on board.

Over the course of around one hour, the two ships will steam together, allowing plenty of opportunities for photography and whistle tooting. During the voyage Shieldhall will pass the cruise ships Celebrity Apex, Iona, MSC Virtuosa and Sky Princess.

Built in Scotland, Steamship Shieldhall is the largest working steamship in Britain and a member of the National Historic Fleet, serving as a tribute to Britain’s maritime heritage.

Shieldhall’s chairman Martin Phipps said: “The sight of the two ‘Glasgow icons’ steaming in the Solent is sure to bring back wonderful memories for many people. It’ll be a fitting way to mark the final steaming weekend for Shieldhall in our 70th anniversary year.”

More group sailings with SS Shieldhall

Groups can take to the water on a Titanic themed trip to on the Solent on Saturday 14th June and a cruise from Poole quay to The Needles in the Isle of Wight, passing Old Harry Rocks on Saturday 9th August.

The vessel also offers a series of all-day packages in Southampton for groups, incorporating a visit to one of Southampton’s Museums, a guided walk with a local expert and an afternoon cruise. Themed packages cover Titanic, The Spitfire, The Mayflower and Southampton’s Towers and Vaults.
